Gypsy at Heart...

"The funkier the better! If it inspires me, then I go for it!"
Barbette Garwood is a local artist living in the Great PNW . Her gypsy spirit and whimsical style is highly influenced by her upbringing having moved around most of her life. Barbette has had to learn very quickly to adapt to many different cultural lifestyles around the US as she transferred from one school to the next, from one state to the next. At one point she stopped to take the time to actually count exactly just how many different schools she had attended! The count included: 14 elementary schools, 1 Jr. HS and 4 HS's! She basically moved from one end of the United States to the other. From one Coast to another! Places like Nevada, Colorado, Florida, Oregon, Washington, Kauai and even briefly the US Virgin Islands! But out of all the places she lived, Kauai will forever have a special place in her heart. In fact, most of her work reflects that of her LOVE for island living spending a lot of her time hanging around the skater/surfer crowd. In fact, back in 2004, Barbette earned 4th place as a semi finalist in Roxy's International Design a T-shirt for the Fiji Pro contest. And at one point SG Magazine published one of her illustrations as fan art.
After getting married and having children, Barbette redirected her talents and began volunteering within her children's local grade schools. She would eventually spend 4 years as Head Decorator for Corbett's Annual Red & Black Auction Dinner , an event that would raise money for local school sports programs that would have at least 300 attendees each year! Barbette would also volunteer for the local children's theater working with set design, costuming, and make up, ect.. As time went on, she found herself beginning to do commissions for design and illustration work for local businesses and special events.
Today, Barbette is no longer volunteering at her local schools but is rediscovering her other passions. She's been devoting more of her time in building her other creative skill sets such as photography, fashion, and visual merchandising!
